How To Do Throw Ups
IT’S ABOUT OVERLAPPING
How to do throw ups is something most new writers struggle with. When you are completely new to painting graffiti, you might need some tips and tricks to get started. For example, when pushing the letters together, you want them to overlap each other. A guiding principle when doing this, is to make each letter overlap the next letter you make, all the way through your throw up. If you overlap your letters the other way around, it will often hide some of the key areas of the letter which will make them unrecognisable. This is because most of the letters in our alphabet have a right-angled direction which will be explained more throughout in chapter 5 of GraffitiBible.
Throw ups should be about showcasing your personal style and line. Some writers say that you can tell a graffitiwriters personality just from looking at their letters. Are their round and bubbly, edgy and agressive or a bit of both worlds? At the end of the day, how to do a throw up is something you should practise everyday on paper and when you have the chance on the wall with real cans. There is a huge difference between pulling lines with a marker and with a can with an astro fat cap on top.
Start simple!
Remember, in the beginning of learning a new thing, you always want to start simple. Don’t overdo it by squeezing to much style into every letter. Try making one throw up with bubble letters, one throw up with edgy letters and one throw up imitating a style you find inspiring. This will help you develop your own unique style along the way! Have fun!
